Soul Project arrived Thursday, bringing the heavy, humid heat of New Orleans with them, and threw down two spirited sets of funk, soul and jazz to kickstart the weekend.

Storytime. Just prior to writing for The SandPaper, this columnist (traveling full time for work) found herself frequently in New Orleans for the cultural immersion. Nothing compares to the atmosphere of that city: the thick aroma of soul food wafting through the air, the vibrant art lining every block and, most notably, live jazz music literally marching down every street.

When visiting New Orleans, if the plan is to get plastered, purchase some beads or a generic T-shirt and hear tired Jimmy Buffett and Lynyrd Skynyrd covers, head to Bourbon Street. To hear real music, hit any one of the clubs along Frenchman Street, where jazz, soul, funk and R&B are pouring out. Most clubs have no cover, just a two-drink minimum, but the clubs with a cover usually have something exciting in store.

It was meandering in and out of venues on Frenchman in June 2017 that this solo traveler stumbled upon Soul Project NOLA, delivering a funk fusion so distinct from what was happening in neighboring clubs and summoning people in from the streets in a near hypnosis. For the next three consecutive nights, she poked around Frenchman until lured in by the same hypnotic soul music.

The following month, after four years of traveling with no home base, a weary traveler decided to make a home base in her familiar stomping grounds of West Creek. On move-in day (coincidentally, her birthday) the Lizzie Rose marquee read “SOUL PROJECT NOLA TONIGHT.”

Almost exactly six years later, Soul Project’s Tuckerton stop on a long East Coast tour has landed squarely in Sound Waves, a dream fulfilled. Founding guitarist Jon Cristian Duque happily sat down with The SandPaper to give backstage insight, including the story behind his Jersey connections, especially with many of his family members in the front row at his show.

Born in Chile, Duque relocated with his family to Pine Beach, N.J., his mother’s home. His maternal grandfather, Capt. Norman F. Reinhard, was commandant of Admiral Farragut Military Academy.

Duque grew up on the Jersey Shore until he relocated to New Orleans on New Year’s Day, 2000, and discovered a whole new world of music. He took a job waiting tables at the convention center (“thank God I was terrible at it,” he quipped) before landing a side stage security gig at legendary New Orleans music venue, Tipitina’s. It was there that he was exposed to the music of the Neville Brothers, George Porter, the Meters, and so on. Soon after, he became a protege of legendary Walter “Wolfman” Washington. He made it his mission to carry on the traditions he learned from being in Washington’s band, The Roadmasters, through the many iterations of the Soul Project.

After Hurricane Katrina overtook the city in 2005, Duque and his band were forced to make a home on the Jersey Shore for nearly nine months. “We brought almost 10 people up from New Orleans,” he said, explaining his home state and its music patrons were incredibly generous, enabling him to raise funds for impacted musicians. They were able to gig nightly for the entire duration. “It was great and we survived and we went home, but we always bring it back, because you know, that was the start where everything was really rolling.”

All NOLA musicians go on tour in the summer, Duque said, “because number one, it’s freakin’ hot! Number two, there’s money to be made on the run.”

With heaps of gratitude, the band returns year after year and Duque was pleased to report, “Now we come back and there’s a New Orleans sound everywhere!” He referenced Asbury Park’s Ocean Avenue Steppers as one great example that Soul Project has enjoyed jamming alongside. The band is pleased to see the tight-knit nature of NOLA musicianship spreading to other hotbeds around the nation.

“I personally believe all American music, besides the gospel side of it – and even a lot of that – came through New Orleans and it was disseminated through the rest of the country, traveling up the rivers and so on,” Duque said, lovingly describing the city as a cultural gumbo. “As far as I’m concerned, it all came from New Orleans.”

Still, many of his lyrics were written in Jersey, and he gladly prefaced many songs with their origin stories. For example, “SLY (Someone Like You)” was written by a girl in an Asbury Park pizzeria, he credited. The band delivered a hefty dose of soul, completely transforming the song from its boardwalk beginnings into a musician’s playground. The saxophonist even surprised the audience, throwing his sax aside to spit an old-school hip hop verse, complementing Duque’s rock riffs.

Duque introduced another tune, “Miss You Baby,” as being “all about how I got stuck in Belmar and met the woman who would become my ex-wife.” After a laugh from the audience, he added, “Listen, she helped me write this song, so I’ll give credit where credit’s due!”

Three years ago, Soul Project was headed for a burnout, Duque said, and made it their goal to perform fewer gigs for more money. Then the pandemic hit and there were neither gigs nor money, which turned out to yield tremendous growth for the band. “It was actually a good time to recharge,” Duque said.

In the same spirit of fellowship that buoyed Soul Project through the Katrina aftermath, Duque and his gang put together the Funky Uncle Live to carry musicians and fellow gig workers through the pandemic with the mission of bringing the funk to the people.

Since April 3, 2020, the Funky Uncle produced 207 livestream concerts, enabling them to raise over $850,000 that went to the employment and grant funding of over 900 musicians and grant workers. Each of the 207 concerts featured a different lineup of musicians, except for the Funky Uncle anniversary. The mission continues today as a way to provide support and archive all those vital to NOLA heritage and traditions. (Visit thefunkyuncle.live to learn more.)

Soul Project emerged from the pandemic renewed and with a complete lineup turnover, and now the goal is to refine their sound before getting back into the studio. “These guys are the cream of the crop,” Duque was pleased to share. “The band is just getting better and better and the songs are evolving.”

They performed a sample of tunes from Soul Project’s debut album as well as their latest release, The Long Hustle, and Duque was not wrong about said evolution. The latest Soul Project was dynamic in every department. The band’s grooves were tight, their transitions smooth, their harmonies on point, their negative space intentional and tasteful. The five-piece threw down a massive sound, then lulled the audience into a soft calm before building back into high tide all over again. Though the Lizzie Rose was not designed for patrons to be out of their seats, patrons shimmied and bounced along in their chairs with hands clapping and toes tapping almost independently.

Duque and longtime bandmate, Grammy-winning NOLA native Wanda Joseph, on bass and vocals are now joined by Wayne Maureau on drums, “Mikey B3” Burkart on keys and vocals, and Eric Bernhardt on sax and vocals.

Joseph grew up a descendant of NOLA royalty, observing the soul movement in the making as the daughter of drummer Vernell “Joe Gunn” Joseph, who played among greats Irma Thomas, Ernie K-Doe and Tommy Ridgly, to name a few. She is known for her soulful grooves and gorgeous harmonies and, more recently, she was awarded a Grammy for her work with Jon Batiste.

Burkart is another seasoned veteran in the music scene, rooted in the city’s traditions of rock, soul, R&B and swamp funk. He seamlessly merges the sounds of the Hammond B3, Fender Rhodes, piano, synth and clavinet into Soul Project’s sonic tapestry. The way he glides across the keys, it almost appears as though he’s hovering just above them. Beyond Soul Project, Burkart fronts his own keyboard-forward band (the Mikey B3 Band) reminiscent of Deep Purple, Fishbone, Muddy Swamp and the Meters.

Bernhardt earned his master’s degree at the University of Denver in jazz and commercial music composition and has since been honing his skills in big bands, small jazz ensembles and R&B outfits, performing at Jazz Fest and French Quarter Fest. He was a soloist in Jump, Jive, and Wail: the Music of Louis Prima. Outside of Soul Project, Bernhardt leads two original outfits: Noggin and a jazz group called the Four Sidemen of the Apocalypse.

Born and raised in New Orleans, Maureau has been a staple not just in his hometown but all over the world. Known for his versatility across genres, he has performed all over and has been featured on countless recordings in his 30 years on the scene. He serves as adjunct faculty percussion instructor at Loyola University, where he is a member of the Faculty Jazz Septet and instructs the Latin Jazz Ensemble. He holds several endorsements and, in 2005, published The Multi-Stylist Drummer, a method book detailing his versatile approach to drumming.

Maureau performs with various groups, but the common thread he shared with Duque was his ties to Wolfman Washington, having drummed for the Roadmasters and the Wolfman Trio for over 15 years.

“Wayne was born and raised in New Orleans and he would go see Walter back when he was way young,” Duque said on behalf of Maureau. “He’d sneak into the Maple Leaf to go see (Wilbert) “Junkyard Dog” (Arnold) and all the greats,” he continued. “The masters, every day, are still playing in New Orleans. After decades of howling new life into a fusion of blues, funk, R&B and soul, he succumbed to cancer, but not without first dropping a 2018 record and marrying longtime girlfriend Michelle Bushey at Tipitinas in 2021.

Hundreds honored Washington in classic NOLA style, with jazz musicians, including Trombone Shorty and an all-star horn band, marching him down to the cemetery. “That was a funeral, man,” Duque wistfully recalled. “The second line, there had to be 500 people by the time we were done.”

When it comes to sonic inspiration, Duque said, “First, it’s New Orleans, period. Then, it’s Walter ‘Wolfman’ Washington.” The band performed a string of Washington tributes, opening set two with “Funk Is in the House,” as they’ve made it their mission to carry his legacy onward.

They also paid tribute to a handful of other influential icons, such as The Neville Brothers, with “Voodoo,” and Jimmy Smith, with “Root Down and Get It,” which spotlighted each of the band members, especially highlighting Maureau’s chops and winning him a standing ovation. They even obliged a request for jazz parade-special “Feet Don’t Fail Me Now.”

Joseph stepped into the spotlight herself, taking lead vocals on Bobby Caldwell’s “What You Won’t Do for Love.” Her singing swooned listeners while she simultaneously held down the pocket with melodic bass work.

>Most surprising, perhaps, was the total metamorphosis of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” which began as a gentle, harmonic lullaby sung by Duque and Joseph. Burkart and Bernhardt each added their flourishes around the building cadence of Maureau’s street beat until they swelled into the jubilation of a full-on New Orleans marching song. Just as things came to a boil, they tactfully simmered the tune back down and tucked it into bed.

While in New Orleans, the band stays steeped in passion, performing at their favorite venues to hear music in: d.b.a., the Maple Leaf and Tipitinas. Now, on their summer tour, their aim is to fill their schedule with music, as it’s the best part. The worst part, according to Maureau, is the downtime spent waiting to play.

“George Porter always says you can tell musicians are dedicated to what they do because they spend 22 hours a day sitting around, waiting, hanging out, traveling … just so they can have that two hours on stage,” Maureau expressed. “That’s really how it is. The down time can wear on you a little bit, but the performance makes up for it. Obviously, the best part is performing for people those couple hours that we’re on stage every night.”

They packed it in at Lizzie Rose before heading back out on the road to hit a few more Jersey Shore venues, followed by a jaunt in Vermont and a two-week stint in Norway. We had a very active spring down in the South. Jazzfest is back in full swing and back to its lively pre-pandemic levels of fun. We met and danced with a few new friends (and some old ones!) on the east coast of Florida. We also opened up for a good friend of ours (and someone you might know!) by the name of Leo Nocentelli over at Zony Mash!

The Soul Project started its spring-fling at a private party in New Orleans at the House Of Blues Parish room. This was the first time we got to play with our brother Mikey B3 Burkhart on the keys! We also had the Soul Project horns in the house; David Ludman on sax and Satoru Ohashi on the trumpet. It felt really good to get to jam with horns again!

Immediately after the gig, we took a loonggg drive to Malabar, Florida where we met up with the Malabackyard crew. This year they decided it was the Soul Project’s turn to “funk up” the yard, and that we did! It was a great time getting to meet and play for all the amazing people we did, and we hope to be back sooner than later! From New York, Connecticut, Jersey, Virgina and Tennesee (East Coast to us...) we made music for a bunch of fantastic people in some great places! Special shout out to Robyn, Frank & Jenny, Poppa Ray and Charlene, and Momma Dukes and Rich for putting the band up in digs far above our station! Back to the tour, we got rained on in NYC, played two yacht clubs, opened the Michael Arnone Crawfish Fest after it's 2 year absence (greatest energy that day!), Wanda & The Suckah's made their debut at Jamians in Red Bank, headed south and played for some BBQers at Liberty BBQ in Falls Church (and stayed 5 minutes from the pentagon...) then closed it all out with a two night run in Tennesee with our friends at The Preservation Pub! Whew! Glad to be home. After a short break we will be at it again. Next up is Tipitina's Friday July 22nd with our friends the Quickening , then off to Norway for a week of shows with our good friends Gro and Eva, followed by a trip out West with our special guests, Jason Neville and Lirette (The First Lady Of Funk) Neville for some Funky Uncle All Star Left Coast Magic. Betcha didn’t think we’d sneak our way onto an already jam-packed French Quarter Fest lineup, did ya?

We weren’t even expecting to play this year! As these things usually happen, we were prepared to take action nonetheless. Our good friend Marc Stone gave us a call early in the week and informed us he was unable to make the fest this year. He mentioned the spot had our metaphorical name on it if we could make it, and make it we did! A major thank you to Marc Stone for even considering us, we definitely owe ya one!

For those of you who couldn’t make it, or are interested, we’ll let you in on what we played:

Breakfast Of Champions
Use Me (Bill Withers)
Sly (Someone Like You)
Miss You Baby
Play It Back (Dr. Lonnie Smith)
Superstition (Stevie Wonder)
What You Won’t Do For Love (Bobby Caldwell)
Mr. Saturday Night
Voodoo (Neville Brothers, “Let’s Go Get ‘Em” by Rebirth Brass Band tag)
Dirty Laundry

Our French Quarter Fest set comes in the middle of a busy week for the band that included two private events, with one right after FQF on Bourbon Street for another good friend of ours; Chris Beary!

It was super enjoyable to play a condensed house show for Chris and his guests. During our second set, renowned trumpet player Efrem Towns of the immortal Dirty Dozen Brass Band gave us a hand on a variety of different tunes.

Built upon the funky foundation of Soul Project NOLA, The Funky Uncle All-Stars bring their own voices to the mix of New Orleans Funk, Blues, Gospel, Jazz. and Groove that the Crescent City continually produces. A new vehicle for Soul Project NOLA frontman Jon Cristian Duque, (Guitar/Vocals), the band draws upon the wealth of talent and musicianship demonstrated weekly on the New Orleans music show, the Funky Uncle Live. Drawing from the seemingly unlimited ranks of New Orleans performers who have played the live streaming show, the Funky Uncle All-Stars is an ever changing cast of characters currently consisting of Wayne Maureau, (Drums (Walter “Wolfman” Washington and the Roadmasters), Jake Gold, (Keyboards (Jake Gold, Gene’s Music Machine, Jon Roniger Good For Nothing Band, Margie Perez), Whitney Alouiscious, (Vocals (Whitney Alouiscious, Sam Price and the True Believers, Gene’s Music Machine, Mustache Petting Zoo) and Wanda Joseph (Bass/Vocals (Soul Project NOLA)
Soul Project NOLAtag:www.soulprojectnola.com,2005:Post/69151802022-02-23T11:45:00-06:002022-03-06T11:41:56-06:00...Stay Tuned
Greetings from New Orleans! Just a quick note to let y'all know that things are starting to amp up for the band. Some things have changed, some things have stayed the same, and as always, we plan to bring the funk to the people. Speaking of that, we are in the middle off planning 4 tours. Tennesee, East Coast, West Coast, and for the first time ever, across the pond to Norway!!! Stay tuned for updates on this and other exciting news coming soon!!
Soul Project NOLAtag:www.soulprojectnola.com,2005:Post/67669572021-10-05T14:31:52-05:002022-03-22T02:50:30-05:00We're (still) Jazzfesting!
Life has been a bit of a roller coaster lately, and one of those up and down loop-de-loop ones at that! From pandemics to mother nature, the funk just can’t seem to catch a break...

First and foremost, we’d like to apologize to our New Jersey friends and family. We had some shows in the works for the end of August, including Michael Arnone’s Crawfish Boil, but unfortunately we’re going to have to reschedule. We’ll be back in due time!

During that time we put on a surprise show for you guys thanks to those funky people over at the Funky Uncle Live! This show was streamed LIVE from St. Peters by the Sea in Gulfport, Mississippi just 3 days after Hurricane Ida tore through Southeast Louisiana. Thanks to everyone who helped make it happen including St. Peters by the Sea for letting us use their Chapel as a music venue, and Chris Beary for making it all happen!
While we aren’t traveling for shows at the moment, for those Funky Uncle All-Star fans at home in the Big Easy, we’re super happy to announce we’ll be taking part in some Funky Uncle Jazzfest activities this year!

As we all know at this point, Jazzfest and *most* of the activities surrounding it have been cancelled this year, but that isn’t going to stop the Funky Uncle All-Stars from bringing the funk to the people!

We’re super excited and funked up to announce we’ll be playing TWO late night Jazzfest shows on October 8th and 14th at the Voodoo Two Lounge over there at 330 Carondelet St. in the CBD! Check out the full lineup including Meters legend Leo Nocentelli!

These shows are brought to you by The Funky Uncle Live, Faubourg Private Wealth, and Voodoo Two Lounge! We hope to see you guys there! And with that comes new adventures and more importantly new announcements.

We’re very excited to announce we’ll be back in the Nashville/Smithville Tennessee area this weekend for the Center Hill Crawfish boil at our good friend Bert Driver’s Nursery and Burlap Room. Come stock up on all the Crawfish you could ever want, and stay for the music! We hit the stage at 8pm.

We’ve also got a little warm up gig scheduled at a cool little hangout in the Knoxville area known as Preservation Pub. If you’re in the area, come check it out Thursday, April 8th! We’ll be playing three (yes THREE!) sets of the funkiest music we can think of!

This is also the debut of an amazing version of Soul Project, or Soul Project NOLA v2.3 as we like to call it. We’ve got the ever so delicious Miss Whitney Alouiscious on vocals, Aaron Walker hitting the skins, Wanda breaking it down with some low end, and new to the Soul Project, welcome Jake Gold on the keys and organ!

Can't Stop The Music!

Greetings from locked down New Orleans!

First off, we hope everyone is doing well, staying safe, and keeping their distance!

That being said, since no one can come to us, we are coming to you with a new weekly concert series "Friday's From the Funky Uncle" featuring different New Orleans musicians every week. Here is some info:

Bougainvillea Productions and Soul Project NOLA have partnered to bring you “Friday’s From the Funky Uncle!”, a webcast featuring New Orleans Funk Musicians playing live to raise money for all members of the entertainment community in New Orleans who are in need. Starting Friday, April 3, 2020, and continuing every Friday thereafter, we will present a live performance from the decks of the one of a kind Mardi Gras float, the Funky Uncle Lounge. Combined with musician interviews and outreach news and in the vein of Soul Train or the Midnight Special, the hour and a half program will stream on FaceBookLive and will raise money through the use of a virtual “tip bucket”. The resulting fund, The Funk Fund, will be distributed to musicians and those in the music industry economically or medically impacted by COVID 19. If you are a fan and lover of this music and are able, you can and should donate anytime to help defer the hardship forced on our cherished New Orleans musicians and the people who work to bring them to you.

Please, if you are able, donate to THE FUNK FUND. All proceeds will go directly to the musicians and those in the music industry affected by the Covid-19 shutdown.

May 29th 2020 (It's about time!!)
We are proud and excited to announce that we are finally playing Michael Arnone's 31st Annual Crawfish Fest in Augusta NJ Friday, May 29th. For those of you who don't know, our summer touring schedule through the last 10 years has never quite lined up with the fest, even though just about everyone we know plays there! We were getting used to the "why aren't you guys doing it?" question that was seemingly on yearly repeat, but no more! We look forward to seeing you all there pinching tails and sucking heads!

Since the successful East Coast Hustle II Tour (all the way back in late July!) the band did the "West Coast Hustle II" with shows at The Boom Boom Room in San Francisco, The Starry Plough in Berkeley, the Alibi Ale House in both Truckee and Incline Village, as well as a special gig on a 40 ft Catamaran on Lake Tahoe itself!! (among others). Returning to New Orleans, they promptly hit the stages at Tipitina's for a show with Corey Henry and James Martin, uptown favorite, Le Bon Temps Roule, and even further uptown, a performance at the one and only Maple Leaf for the 2019 Po'Boy Fest! At that same Po'Boy Fest, Jeremy, Wanda snd Cristian joined Big Chief Gerald Paige and Jamal Batiste for a closing set on the Dante Stage for some serous Indian grooves to close out the festivities. Straight up New Orleans Funk Fo Sho!

Looking forward, the new year promises to bring new tunes, new recordings, new digs (as in see ya later Frenchmen), new tours, and as always nothing but soul!!!

“They’ve mixed elements of jazz, funk, soul, blues, reggae and gospel to create an album with many facets under a cohesive groove.”

-Stacey Leigh Bridewell, Offbeat.

The album demonstrates a maturing sound that is quickly attracting the attention of serious music fans and pays tribute to the dedication and persistence of the New Orleans working musician determined to set the stage on fire night after night.

“Though they proclaim themselves to be funksters, and they are definitely funky, old school New Orleans R&B runs through their music like blood runs through veins.”- Jay Mazza, The Vinyl District

Finding inspiration in the music of Walter “Wolfman” Washington, the Meters, the Neville Brothers, Galactic and Dr. John, the band's members - Jon Cristian Duque (guitar/vocals), Jeremy Habegger (organ/keys/vocals), David Ludman (saxophones), Aaron Walker (drums) and Wanda Joseph (bass) - are right at home being rooted in the rich tradition of New Orleans Funk and R&B, while their distinctive sound leans forward combining the best of the old schools with the new.

From my spot on the drum riser next to Wilbert "Junkyard Dog" Arnold, I not only continued my education from the greatest vantage point, but also got to experience the magic that happens in this special room. From the early days of James Booker to the Mondays with Papa Gros Funk, Tuesdays with Rebirth Brass Band, to the Thursday trio gigs with Johnny Vidacovich, George Porter Jr., and whoever was the chosen one pulled from the myriad of stellar musicians who came to throw down with the best, this stage, and the adjoining bar, has soaked up everything New Orleans has to offer. The good the bad and the ugly (which most times was just us reacting to something someone played that was so nasty no other reaction would do!). The Leaf was also the place where everyone could just hang out. During set breaks it was always an adventure to walk around the different pockets of people, sit down for a minute to say hi then move on. Everyone knew everyone and everyone was glad to be there. The wandering would ultimately stop when I found Walter, usually in the side alley surrounded by fans and friends. He would get serious and let me know how I was doing, what I was doing well and of course what I could do better, and then make his way to the stage, pick up his guitar, strums those Walter "getting ready" chords and announce "Second set!, second set!. I never remember too much after that!
Soul Project NOLAtag:www.soulprojectnola.com,2005:Post/57501072019-05-10T13:37:28-05:002019-05-10T13:37:28-05:00Wednesdays at The Maple Leaf!

Greetings from New Orleans! It's Festival time and of course we have been super busy. What with working on the new album, constant gigging on Frenchmen St. and beyond, taking the Funky Uncle out for Mardi Gras, playing Jazzfest with Walter "Wolfman" Washington and the Roadmasters, and hitting Parlor Studios with multi Grammy Award winning producer Bob "Bassy" Brockman for a quick session (featuring guest appearances by Whitney Alouisious, Jason and Lirette Neville, and Daru Jones) , the band somehow made it through (mostly) intact and ready for more!. Now the focus is shifting to our first ever Wednesday residency at the famed Maple Leaf, with our "Trifecta @ the Leaf" series (which will take place the last three Wednesdays of May), and planning for another East Coast/West Coast Hustle in late July and August. Stayed tuned for more info and tour dates.

The band has played Tip's several times over the years, but this time definitely stood out. The room was already quite full when we started our set, and the crowd was hyped and ready to get down from the first notes of our opener "Walkin with Walter", a brand spankin' new tune which honors our musical Godfather Walter 'Wolfman Washington. Wolfman caught the entire set from side stage, and we could feel his grin radiating across the stage. With pride he watched his protege Cristian guiding his own band, using what he had learned from Walter to make music with his own vision and facilitate a musical conversation on the bandstand. No wonder Walter was smiling, too-- coming off the road from our 14-date East Coast Hustle Tour the band was super tight and firing on all cylinders.

Papa Gros' set was amazing, and Cristian was invited up to play a couple songs. Brad Walker swung by to blow the roof off the place on his birthday night.

The band's proclaimed mission is to bring the Funk to the People. That surely happened in a big way this night. Tipitina's is an iconic room for New Orleans music, and having Professor Longhair literally watching over us was truly an honor. We can't wait for our next chance to play that room.

Greetings from sweltering New Orleans. Just a quick update on what's been happening: The new album has been selling steady (What??? You don't have yours yet? ??? Click here!) and the summer storms haven't scared away too many people (yet!), so the live shows have been as packed as ever. We have already started working on the next record and are gearing up for our 2018 East Coast Summer Tour (Look for dates, coming soon!). JazzFest was a flash, but it was great to see and make music with so many good friends who we don't get to see enough! It's also such a blessing and charge to see so many people from all over the world here in the city that really listen to the music, who hears the music, who feels the music, which, of course, is the whole point of this thing LOL! We also helped raise over $10,000 for Grace at the Greenlight, the charity of the Krewe Of Fat Bankers/Funky Tucks with the first FreeFunkFest, during which we successfully pulled out The Funky Uncle Lounge for it's first free concert. We are planning the next one for September.

As always, stay tuned for more, and...

Greetings.

I know it's been a rough ride in parts of the country other than New Orleans so I won't talk about how beautiful it is here right now!!! I will, however invite any and all to come and visit the city during this, "The Greatest time of the Year"!! Why is it great? Festival season is upon us. The balance of people in town once again shifts to the music/food/life lovers/appreciators and away from the Bourbon Street (Frenchmen St.) partiers. People from all over the world descend upon the city bringing with them their energy, culture, and appreciation for what goes on here. Like a breath of fresh air the soul of the city is renewed and music, once again, is king. That being said, you really can't miss with any show in town, however, a few we would d like to see you at are...

Soul Project, one of the hardest working bands in New Orleans, will make their first appearance at D.B.A., though hardly their first show on Frenchmen Street, on Sunday to celebrate the release of their sophomore effort, The Long Hustle. Show time is 10 PM and the band expects numerous special guests including several of the musicians who have cycled through New Orleans’ own self-proclaimed ambassadors of funk over the years.

Led by guitarist and vocalist Cristian Duque, Soul Project has been grinding it out in the clubs of New Orleans since 2001. The Long Hustleis the follow-up album to their 2013 Offbeat magazine’s “Best Of The Beat” nominated debut album, Music For Movers & Shakers.

I have seen the band numerous times over the years and a recent set at the Louisiana Music Factory found the group on top of their game. Though they proclaim themselves to be funksters, and they are definitely funky, old school New Orleans R&B runs through their music like blood runs through veins.

In his younger years, Duque appeared many times on stage with the great local legend Walter “Wolfman” Washington. Soul Project takes many of its cues from the instrumentation and musical approach of Washington and his longtime ensemble, the Roadmasters, including the presence of an ace horn section.

While clearly influenced by Washington, Soul Project has carved out a niche on the New Orleans music scene with great original songs that reflect the life of the 21st century musician. The Long Hustle is a testament to perseverance, commitment, and dedication to craft. Give it a listen and come out to the show.

This Sunday is the long-awaited release party and we can't wait! We've been busy working our new material and dusting off some old favorites. With some retooled tracks [like Celia, Down By The Riverside and What’s the Meter (With You)] that have finally been realized in their intended form, to brand new offerings (What We Got, BedBugs, Spotlight), compositions from saxophonist David Ludman (Blue Snail) and Jeremy Habegger (Gsus), and the band’s New Orleans-inspired cover of The Beatles’ “Blackbird”, this album has something for everybody.

Stay tuned for further installments:

What is Funk? Funk is a sound, a feeling, a motion. It can also be described as something nasty or bad, something that doesn't smell right, but only in the vernacular of the people who, when they say something is so good they say "That's bad!!!". However, it's also so much deeper than that. We will go into the history of Funk on another occasion, but for the purposes of this overview let me describe how I personally found out what Funk actually was.

I grew up in a musical world that was dominated by Heavy Metal aggression and depressing "woe is me!" singer songwriters. While I am sure they both deserve their place in the pantheon (I still like to bang my head on occasion! LOL) I always felt that those styles just added to the mountains of negativity that we face every day already. And even the happy feel good pop music seemed a little on the corny side for my tastes.

Then one day, it happened. While listening to some suitably heavy music with some friends I accidentally pushed play on the wrong cassette player (remember those?) Someone, (probably as a joke) had put a "Best of the Jackson 5" tape in there. Out of the speakers that had been blaring Metallica and Alice in Chains came the unmistakable sound of "I Want You Back". I was transfixed at the stereo. More incredibly, though, when I was able to turn around, I saw all of my heavy metal, doom and gloom brothers and sisters up off the couch and..."DANCING!!!"LOL. These were cats who definitely did "NOT" boogie! And even though they were most likely fooling around and making fun of it and themselves, what I realized is that the music, the groove of the music, made them do two important things. One, they knew that they were supposed to dance, and two, for one minute, they forgot who they were (or who they were supposed to be) and could laugh, smile, boogie and groove! That doesn't happen with all music. I witnessed the same thing riding with you all on the parade route. When The Funky Tucks came rolling down the street I saw all manners and types of people get out of their chairs, forget what it was that they were doing and start dancing. Even if they didn't recognize the song or group, they forgot their troubles and problems for that brief magical moment that happens only when we get out of our own way and let our true selves, our souls, shine through. And that is something worth talking about...

That's all for now, so,
Until...
We Meet...
Again!
Soul Project NOLAtag:www.soulprojectnola.com,2005:Post/49404802017-11-19T12:35:00-06:002018-02-27T12:32:34-06:00What is Funk? 2
I last left you funking it up to The Jackson 5 with a bunch of metalheads. I would like to fast forward in this story to what happened to me when I finally found my way to New Orleans. I arrived in the city on New Year’s Day 2000 but still had no idea about the music here. I got a job waiting tables at the convention center and it was there that I first overheard the talk from the older guys on the job about The Neville Bros, The Meters, The Wild Tchoupitoulas, Tipitinas… They would talk like they were experts, and they probably were because they had grown up uptown and lived that history. I knew who Aaron Neville was because he had had some crossover hits that made it to my ears. I also had heard of Ivan Neville through one of his tracks on that Christian Slater movie, “Pump UpThe Volume (1990))”. But other than that I was like most of the people in the country, ignorant. My apartment was right off of Napoleon Ave so I decided to check out Tipitinas. Turns out it was Mardi Gras and they were looking for help. I got the job and wound up working security for what felt like 10 days straight! I soaked in all that Tipitina’s had to give. Professor Longhair, dozens of posters of (what I know now were) incredible shows lining the balcony, rare James Brown pumping through the PA and getting the people “greased” up (a serious lesson in funk itself!!). The energy was building already! When George Porter Jr. and His Runnin’ Pardners (with John “Poppa” Gras on B3 and Russel Batiste Jr. on drums) hit the stage, the sounds and grooves and something else I couldn’t quite figure out (The Funk) hit me! It changed the way I thought about music. It sounded better than anything I had ever heard!! Now when I say sounded better you have to understand I mean that I had been in bands and doing sound and going to concerts all of my life. Until this moment I truly had no idea how bad sound was everywhere else!!! The music coming out of those purple Turbo Sound speakers was so loud and full and yet didn’t hurt my ears one bit! I could even have had a conversation with the person next to me if I had wanted to (which I didn’t cause all I wanted was to listen to the music!). But that was only part of it. After marveling at the quality of the sound, I started focusing on the music. It sounded so good because they were playing everything “right”! I’m not saying that as some sort of judge or critic, but more that when something is right, it’s just right. You can’t explain it. You can just feel it. Every note, every hit, every riff, put exactly where it felt like it should. And it was FUNKY!!! And everybody felt it together. Everyone was smiling, including the band. I was amazed at the positivity and great vibes. That moment of discovering funk music and great sound and positive energy made me a funkster for life. I have always felt that if everyone could have the same type of experience that I had that day at Tipitina’s, they would feel the same. As a matter of fact, that is the driving idea behind The Funky Uncle Lounge! Since a good amount of people will never step foot in Tipitina’s or a club like that, then we will to bring the club, quality sound, and Funk experience to them!!! Exciting times indeed!

That's all for now, so,

Until...

Starting with the French Quarter Fest andending with JazzFest and the Bayou Boogaloo (and everything in between) it is hands down a musical paradise. We got to play on a new stage at the FQF (The Jack Daniels Stage) and had the performance streamed live on WWOZ 90.7FM (www.wwoz.org). We played not one but two shows with the boss man Walter "Wolfman" Washington. It was an honor to open up the 30th anniversary of the Roadmasters at Tipitina's (video and audio coming soon!) and an even greater pleasure to play at Chiki Wah Wahs with Walter as our special guest. For that show we arranged 5 of his tunes using only New Orleans style piano, saxophone, rhythm guitar, and Walter on guitar and vocals, and. It was a great sound and we expect to do more full shows like it in the future. We shut down Frenchmen street on multiple nights and played to thousands of new fans and old friends alike (You know who you are!!!) Regrettably we didn't get to play at the fairgrounds (there's always next year, right?) but we were fortunate to play the Official (in our minds lol) JazzFest after party at Kenny Town (right outside the Mystery gate of the Fest). Thanks to everybody who came out and threw down with us.
